Performance-based pricing: A key to balancing the power system in the electrified era

As society moves away from fossil fuels and toward electrification, the energy system faces new challenges. Increased use of electricity requires not only the expansion of electricity generation and the grid, but also more intelligent use of resources. One of the major challenges is managing peak demand, which occurs when many people use electricity at the same time for different purposes, such as charging electric vehicles or starting large fan systems when operations begin in the morning.

To manage these peaks and ensure stability in the electricity system, electricity grid companies have begun introducing capacity-based pricing. By linking the price of electricity to demand at different times of day or at different load levels, customers are given incentives to help even out the peaks. This means that customers who can shift their electricity use to times when demand is lower can gain financial benefits while also helping to reduce the load on the electricity system.

To make it easier for electricity grid customers to monitor and adjust their own electricity consumption, requirements have been introduced to replace the property's main electricity meter with a new smart electricity meter featuring a HAN-P1 port, also known as a HAN port or customer interface. The port enables property owners to access information about their own electricity consumption in real time. By 2025 at the latest, all electricity meters in Sweden are to be equipped with a HAN-P1 port.
