New recommendation for the introduction of IMD water.

As of 2022, the installation of IMD systems for domestic hot water is required in new multi-family buildings. For existing multi-family buildings, the requirement applies to renovations that include the new installation of domestic hot water or a substantial alteration to the existing domestic hot water installation. For environmental and cost reasons, it is becoming increasingly common to implement IMD systems in existing multi-family buildings as well. Read more about IMD here! The negotiations concerning the introduction of IMD water metering have been time-consuming due to the lack of a common basis. Based on the new regulations, the three parties (Fastighetsägarna, the Swedish Union of Tenants and Sveriges Allmännytta) believe and hope that the joint recommendation will streamline local negotiations.

Fastighetsägarna, the Swedish Union of Tenants and Sveriges Allmännytta have developed general recommendations to facilitate the introduction of IMD water metering.

Recommendations include:

  • How to ensure a well-functioning domestic hot water system.
  • How to establish normal domestic hot water consumption before introducing IMD water metering.
  • Documentation for rent adjustments in connection with the introduction of IMD water metering.
  • Negotiated agreement, including the handling of annual price changes.
  • What information should residents receive before introducing IMD water metering?

IMD requirements

Since 1 June 2022, legislation has been in place on energy metering in buildings with regard to domestic hot water. The law states that IMD systems must be installed when constructing new multi-family buildings as of 1 June 2022.
