Eviny

Customer:

Eviny is one of Norway’s largest energy suppliers, producing and distributing electricity to more than 180,000 customers. Eviny is strongly committed to the environment and states that “society needs more green energy and good, innovative solutions that make life easier and better for people.” In addition to providing climate-friendly energy, the company also contributes to society by offering free educational programs and sponsoring many local sports associations.

Eviny is a forward-looking energy company that aims to lead the development of climate-friendly energy and innovative infrastructure solutions. The group is headquartered in Bergen. Eviny already operates more than 30 hydropower plants and more than 3,000 kilometers of fiber-optic network. In addition, the company builds and operates district heating plants in Bergen. Some of the homes supplied with electricity by Eviny are also offered individual metering of hot water used for heating and consumption.

The challenge:

Eviny Energitjenester had been using the M-Bus protocol for many years, but was not satisfied with the existing solution that had been supplied. It was a difficult system to work with, and whenever changes needed to be made or meter types added, they had to contact the supplier, which was both time-consuming and very expensive. The company realized that there was a need for a new communication solution and therefore began searching for a better one. After discussions with several meter suppliers, they heard about PiiGAB. Øystein Kjosavik, an energy consultant at Eviny Energitjenester, then contacted us, and everything moved very quickly after that.

The solution:

Initially, Eviny Energitjenester needed a communication solution for a project involving individual metering in student housing. Consumption values such as heating, water, gas and electricity are collected from each individual apartment’s meters. The tenant is then billed for their individual consumption. Eviny Energitjenester needed to make this work smoothly, efficiently and securely, and we soon arrived at a simple yet highly effective solution that would meet their needs: our M-Bus converter PiiGAB 900 with the additional QuickPost application. PiiGAB 900 collects all meter readings, while QuickPost enables the converter to send the meter values directly to an FTP server. Eviny Energitjenester also requested a configuration application, as there were a great many meters to be read and configuring each one individually would have been far too time-consuming. We therefore developed an application that searches for all meters on the M-Bus loop and automatically places them in the correct template. This saves the company a great deal of time and also allows it to operate more independently.

Because the M-Bus protocol provides traceability throughout the entire process, readings become more precise and configuration easier, as the meter number can be linked to the reading.

After the initial project, Eviny Energitjenester gradually began replacing the existing solutions at its other facilities. Today, Eviny Energitjenester has 65 facilities where PiiGAB 900 serves as the reading unit. At present, more than 5,000 M-Bus meters are being read, all through PiiGAB 900. In addition, four new facilities with more than 1,300 meters distributed across four converters are currently being completed, one of which is Norway’s largest shopping center. Eviny operates according to the motto “We give tomorrow new opportunities,” and at PiiGAB we are very proud and happy to have the opportunity to contribute to this.
