What is wireless M-Bus communication?

In practice, wireless M-Bus is planned as zones: meters in apartments, plant rooms, etc. send their readings to the nearest gateway or via repeaters to a gateway, which in turn communicates the metering data to different systems, such as sub-metering systems, BMS systems or a locally installed PLC/DDC for controlling the property. This architecture is easy to scale when more systems and cloud services need access to metering data.
How does wireless M-Bus work in practice?
At its core, wireless M-Bus works as follows: each meter transmits readings at a defined interval and identifies itself with a unique address. One or more gateways listen within the building and collect the telegrams. The gateways validate the data, add a timestamp and forward it to your systems, such as a BMS, an analytics platform or a sub-metering system for billing.
For optimal commissioning, update intervals are configured according to requirements: short intervals for troubleshooting and demand control, and longer intervals for trend logging and reporting. You then determine which data points should be included for each meter type.
